Proxmox PBS backup monitoring.
Proxmox VE emails a "vzdump backup status" report after each backup job. Newer versions route it through the notification system; older ones use a field on the job.

Every client gets its own email address when you add it. Reports sent or forwarded there are read by the built-in rule for Proxmox PBS, and each result lands on the backup it belongs to.
Written for Proxmox VE 8.1 or later for the notification system; earlier versions use the job's own email field.
The full guide, step by step- In Proxmox VE 8.1 or later, go to Datacenter → Notifications, add an SMTP target with the address as recipient, and a matcher that sends backup notifications to it.
- On earlier versions, edit the backup job (Datacenter → Backup), put the address in "Send email to" and set "Send email" to Always.
- The report carries no job name: with more than one backup under this client, use the backup's exact address instead.
How a report finds its backup.
- Matching
- The built-in rule applies to reports with "vzdump backup status" or Proxmox in the subject, and reads the result, the total size and the running time, but not a job name. Give each backup job its own address, or keep one backup per client.
- Check it works
- Run the job once, or wait for the next scheduled run. Within a minute the report appears under the backup, or in the Inbox when it could not be matched. A product's own "send test email" is not a backup result: expect it in the Inbox, where you can ignore it.
Then every Proxmox PBS job has a status.
- Status
- Each report sets Healthy, Warning or Failed. Failures in a row count as a streak.
- Missing
- No report inside the job’s window and the backup turns Missing, like a failure would.
- Attention
- Failed, missing and warning backups are listed for the team, to acknowledge, snooze or resolve.
- Alerts
- Email, Slack, Microsoft Teams or PagerDuty, and a recovery notice when the next report is OK.
